We didn't set out to build a luxury escape. The idea for Prospect Cabin came about during a tough time, when our son — a builder by trade — was off work recovering from illness. He needed something to fill a part of his day, a project with purpose but no pressure. We had an old, rough-around-the-edges shepherd's hut sitting unused on the farm, and thought: why not rebuild it? Maybe even sell it. At the very least, it would keep him busy.
What followed was the beginning of something much more special than we imagined.
From Hut to Haven
The hut was in rough shape, but it had good bones. It was completely stripped back — all the cladding, old pink batts, windows, doors, kitchen, and bathroom were removed. We started fresh by fitting new double-glazed windows and doors, giving it a strong, weather-tight shell.
Then came the move.
With its new windows and doors in place, the hut was carefully lifted onto a truck and moved across the farm to a quiet, elevated spot with uninterrupted views of Mt St Bathans and the Hawkdun Range. There's not another building in sight — just sky, hills, and space to breathe.
Once it was settled into its new home, the real transformation began.
The old pink batts were replaced with natural wool insulation — warm, breathable, and a beautiful nod to the cabin's pastoral history. We relined the interior with fresh plywood, installed a brand-new bathroom with a full-size 1200mm shower, flush toilet, and vanity, and re-plumbed the whole space. A two-burner gas hob and gas hot water system went in, along with a solar setup to power lights, the fridge, and other essentials.
For warmth, we chose a beautiful 'Roaring Meg' wood burner that now brings instant comfort to winter stays.
Built with Many Hands
The kwila deck came next — a big job pulled together over a long weekend with good friends. Then came the outdoor bath, perfect for soaking in under the stars. We fenced the area around the cabin to keep the livestock out, and added final touches with love and attention.
One of the most special features is access to your own private area beside Dunstan Creek, just a 400m wander from the cabin. A peaceful swimming and fishing hole nestled under the willows, it's a slice of summer magic.
A Labour of Love
Every member of our family has played a part in bringing Prospect Cabin to life — from rebuilding and planning to painting, lifting, digging, and dreaming. What began as a way to pass the time became a true labour of love.
The result is a simple but beautifully finished off-grid retreat where you can rest, breathe deeply, and reconnect with nature. There's no WiFi here, and no need for it. Just birdsong, fresh air, and the ever-changing light across the ranges.
We're so proud of what that old shepherd's hut has become. And we're even prouder to share it with those needing a little stillness too.
